Phil Hummel – Architectural components that are Critical to the success of AFAs for SQL Server

Phil Hummel – June 9 2015 12:00 CST Architectural components that are Critical to the success of AFAs for SQL Server Description: SQL Server is growing more complex and ad Abstract All-flash arrays(AFAs) are a relatively new technology that is having a major impact on database design and operations. AFAs are especially useful in the case of a workload that looks like this: • Large amounts of small block, random I/O • Read intensive workloads • Low I/O latency is required for application performance • I/O bandwidth spikes in response to reporting or data extract needs • The database(s) size is less than the capacity of an all-flash array In this talk we will examine the architectural components that are critical to the success of AFAs for SQL Server applications including: • Use of all commodity hardware to align to industry hardware advancements (i.e. Moore’s Law) • Optimized software and hardware to fully utilize performance of flash all the way to the applications/databases • Scale-Out Design: Should provide investment protection & linear scalability for both IOPS & capacity • Active/Active Controllers: Leverage all investments • High Capacity Utilization (70+%): Overhead should be minimized to allow growth/support for multiple applications Speaker Bio: Phil Hummel is a Solutions Architect on the EMC Microsoft Specialty Presales team. He is responsible for developing and presenting demonstrations showing the integration of Microsoft enterprise software solutions with EMC storage hardware and software. Phil has been working with SQL Server since 1998 in his role as a Solutions Architect for marchFirst and then from 2001-2010 as a Technical Sales Professional for Microsoft. He completed the Microsoft Certified Masters certification for SQL Server while working for Microsoft. Phil’s career prior to focusing on Microsoft SQL Server involved writing software and managing projects for the electric power and natural gas industries focused on energy demand forecasting and the impacts of government sponsored energy efficiency programs. He is a PASS member and speaks frequently at user groups in the Bay Area and a SQL Saturday – Silicon Valley.
